There are three main categories of water purifiers--carbon filters, reverse osmosis systems and water distillers.
Carbon filters remove the taste and odor and, most importantly, the chlorine, from your water. However, these filters become less effective with each glass of water filtered and become a breeding ground for bacteria. Consequently, they need to be changed or cleaned frequently, making them costly. In addition, the purity of the water filtered though each degrades after the first glass because the filter is holding the contaminants filtered out.
Reverse osmosis systems force water through a very fine membrane and leave the impurities behind. This concept works well under ideal conditions, but reverse osmosis requires a specific water pressure and temperature to operate at peak performance. In addition reverse osmosis systems use water to flush away impurities. Three to 10 gallons of water goes down the drain for every 1 gallon of filtered water produced. Again, because this is a filter, the quality of the output water begins degrading almost immediately. And again, cost and frequency of replacing filters can be prohibitive.
A water purifier/distiller effectively removes substances such as arsenic, aluminum, bacteria, chloride, chlorine, chloroform, copper, fluoride, lead, mercury, nitrates, sodium, sulfate, trihalomethane (THM) and viruses. A FACT that cannot be disputed is that water distillation removes the broadest range of contaminants over any other form of point of use (POU) water treatment system.
