Care for Farmers - We set up long-term, above-market contracts to sustain coffee farmers through price fluctuations. The price we pay is always higher than the Fair Trade Certified price floor of $1.26. Care for the Community - We spend upwards of $800,000 per year to create truly effective educational, nutritional, and healthcare programs for our coffee workers and their families. We've built schools, medical clinics, and worker housing in impoverished communities where previously there were none.
We're very proud of the quality of the coffee we sell. At every stage of the coffee life cycle, we strive to attain the highest level of quality possible. Because we grow, import, and roast our own coffee, we can bypass the middlemen and pass the savings on to you. That's why we can provide such high quality coffee at such great prices.
All of the coffee we buy is 100% Arabica grown under a canopy of rainforest-preserving shade trees at an elevation over 3000 ft. Much of the coffee we buy is also certified 100% organic. Shade grown and organic farming methods make for healthier soil, prevent water contamination and provide habitat for dozens of species of migratory birds. Coffee grown under a shade canopy produces fewer, but more flavorful, coffee cherries. As opposed to "full sun" coffee cherries, the cherries of shade-grown coffee develop more slowly and with more intensity. The difference can be tasted in the cup.
Farmers also get a higher price premium for their certified organic and shade-grown coffee, so they take better care of their trees and harvest them with more care.
